Range Rules & Policies

NEVER fool around or play with guns. Guns are dangerous when they are not handled or used properly. They can easily injure or kill you and those around you. There are no second chances with a gun and the rules for safe gun handling must always be followed to avoid accidents.

Range Rules

  • Know and follow all the rules of the Shooting Range.
  • Listen and do what the Range Master tells you to do. The range master will direct all fire / cease fire actions and enforce all other rules of the range.
  • Always treat the gun as if it is loaded.
  • Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. Downrange would be best!
  • Always keep the gun on safe until you intend to shoot.
  • Always KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER, and outside the trigger guard, until ready to fire or until the command “Commence firing” has been given.
  • Always KEEP THE ACTION OPEN AND FIREARM UNLOADED UNTIL READY TO USE.
  • Never point the gun at anything you don’t intend to destroy.
  • Be sure of the target and what is beyond it.
  • Know the mechanical and handling characteristics of the gun you are using.
  • Always use proper ammunition.
  • Shoot only at authorized targets. Never shoot at water or hard surfaces.
  • Be sure the barrel is clear of obstructions before loading and shooting.
  • Unload, open the action, remove the magazine and ground and / or bench all firearms during a cease fire.
  • Do NOT handle any firearm or stand at the firing line where firearms are present while others are down range.
  • Always keep the muzzle pointed at the backstop, bullet trap, or berm. Never allow the muzzle to point in any direction whereby an inadvertent discharge would allow the escape of a projectile into an outer area.
  • If your gun fails to fire when the trigger is pulled, hold your shooting position for several seconds; then, with the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, carefully unload the gun.
  • Don’t rely on the gun’s safety to keep it from firing.
  • Be aware of your surroundings when handling guns. You don’t want to trip or lose your balance and accidentally point and / or fire the gun at anyone or anything.
  • WEAR EAR AND EYE PROTECTION

Guest Check-In Policies

  • Members must sign any guests in and out in the HISR Guest Log Book (located in the Range Main Office)
  • For guests brought on Monday and/or Tuesday, arrangements must be made in advance since the range main office is closed on those days.
  • All Tokens except those belonging to Gold Members will expire July 30, 2023
  • ALL guests MUST complete and sign the HISR Waiver prior to entering the range area. They can do this in the Range Office or at the links below.

Firing Line Ops

  • The person on the left-most lane assumes responsibility of range control unless a range safety officer (RSO) is present.
  • Only 1 shooter is allowed per lane during range-hot.
  • All weapons are to remain unloaded and rendered safe (action open and chamber flag in place) until the order to commence firing is given.
  • Only shoot at your target.
  • When cease fire is called, immediately stop shooting and render the weapon safe (action open and chamber flag in place). Place weapons in a safe position and move behind the firing line.
  • Anyone who observes an unsafe situation should immediately call for a cease fire.
  • Do not proceed downrange until the all clear command is given by range control. No handling of weapons while people are downrange.
  • The range will be “hot” (weapons firing) for 20 minutes and will then be “cold” (cease firing) for 10 so as to allow for target maintenance. Variations are allowed if all are agreeable.
  • If desired, plastic bottles/jugs or other similar items may be used as targets. They must be placed on the backstop. All such targets must be cleared before leaving the range. Absolutely NO glass targets of any kind.

Action Bay & Steel Park Policies

  • Anyone using either the action bays or the steel park MUST first sign in at the Range Main Office and must sign out when done.
  • Action Bays and Steel Park will be left in the same or better condition as they were found. All garbage will be collected and disposed, target stands returned to the shed, and steel painted (Steel Park).
  • DO NOT MOVE THE STEEL TARGETS. If you desire a different layout for the steel, talk to Don FIRST.
